Civil War Trails
Home to the Capitol of the Confederate States of America, Richmond, Virginia served as a focal point of both battle and command during the Civil War. In fact, the war ended when the fortifications at Petersburg, just south of the city broke through leaving Richmond undefendable. During much of the war, the taking of Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederate States of America, became a Union obsession.
Because the area around Richmond is so rich in Civil War history, following this Civil War Trails trip will be a full, but rewarding, experience. During your exploration, you’ll come to understand why the North felt it was absolutely necessary to capture Richmond, with "on to Richmond" serving as a primary Union battlecry.
In order to present the full picture of the campaigns, we’ll be directing you to the major flash points of the battles that occurred around Richmond. Using one of the historic hotels in the city as a home base, your trip will take you throughout the City of Richmond as well as the nearby Fredericksburg and Petersburg to explore.
